The increasing number of Victorian medical graduates is placing significant pressure the availability and allocation of internship positions. The aim of this survey is to find out what senior medical students think about the current internship allocation system in Victoria as well as some proposed changes that could be implemented in the future. The results of this survey will help guide MSCV’s representation of student views in the ongoing review and reform of the Victorian internship application and allocation process.
This survey will be emailed to you for you to complete if you are a medical student enrolled at Victorian medical school and are currently completing, or have completed, your penultimate year of medical studies.
The Medical Student Council of Victoria (MSCV) is proud to announce that applications are now open for the position of Chair of Council in 2012.
To serve as Chair is an exciting opportunity for a committed medical student to lead a team of engaged student leaders, represent Victorian medical students, run state-level advocacy campaigns and oversee major student-run events. The role requires a significant personal time commitment.
Please click here for a document containing the Chair’s position description and full application process requirements. Vision statements are to be no more than three hundred words long.
Applications are now open and must be emailed to your MedSoc President by 9pm on Monday 26th of September (details of whom can be found on the Contact tab above). Applicants must be available to attend the Council meeting on the evening of the 3rd of October in Melbourne.
Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the current Chair, James Churchill, via the Contact tab above.
Congratulations to all teams who battled it out at the recent MSCV Sports Day Dodgeball competition. After 19 hard-fought Dodgeball contests, 40 pizzas devoured and a few injuries sustained, the results are as follows:
1. Globe Trotters (Monash)
2. Deakin 2 (… Deakin)
3. Balls Deep (Deakin)
The winners went home with a ridiculously large trophy, runners up with lollipops and medals. Thanks to Pete Verbeek, Monash student, for his work in organising the event.
Thanks to all who came along to play, or spectate, and we hope to see you at an MSCV event again soon!

MSCV has received a response from the Office of the Minister for Health, in response to its letter sent in late February regarding the looming crisis of Internship capacity in Victorian public hospitals.
Please click here for the Minister’s response. Your MedSoc representatives would love to hear your feedback — their contact details may be found on the ‘Contact’ page above.

In 2011, the major issue facing all Australian Medical Student representative bodies remains the availability of sufficient Internship positions for graduates. Many student groups, including the Australian Medical Student’s Association (AMSA), MSCV and individual Medical Student Societies have joined the Australian Medical Association, Medical Deans and Postgraduate Medical Councils in advocating for the rights of graduates to receive the training vital for ‘general’ registration and future practice in Australia.
From the training capacity perspective, data on increases in the number of Victorian Medical graduates is alarming. In 2007, two Medical Schools produced 403 graduates, including International students. This year, five Schools are predicted to produce 853! National data are equally staggering.
The ‘Medical Student Tsunami’, after breaking over Queensland and NSW in recent years, is making its way to Victoria for 2012. Whilst there is now widespread awareness and acknowledgement of these issues, there remains a significant discrepancy between the number of Internship positions in Victorian health services and the number graduates of Victorian Medical Schools.
MSCV is aware of the significant concerns of Victorian students, and has been working hard on these issues over the summer.
Today, we have released a letter to Hon David Davis, the Victorian Health Minister, outlining the concerns of Victorian Medical students. Alongside, we have released a letter to Victorian Medical students advising them on the status and progress in Internship capacity in this state. Also linked here is the AMA Medical Training Joint Statement, developed in September 2010.
MSCV will continue to post any new information as it becomes available. Contact details for MSCV and its student representatives may be found on the ‘Contact’ tab above.
